IDEALOKA.COM (Banyuwangi) – The Banyuwangi Regency Government, East Java, Indonesia, has prepared a new facility, namely a shelter specifically intended for Social Attention Needs (SAN). This shelter or transit place is provided by SAN residents before receiving further treatment and assistance.
“We have prepared the shelter to provide more optimal services to SAN. For example, punk kids, street buskers, and People with Mental Disorders (PMD) who are caught in a raid. They are placed in this shelter while waiting for an assessment and before further treatment,” said Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, Monday, April 21, 2025.
Ipuk hopes that the presence of the shelter can improve services for the SAN group in terms of facilities and assistance provided.
“In this shelter, we can provide comprehensive coaching and intervention so that SAN residents will no longer take to the streets to earn a living. We will provide treatment according to their conditions and needs so that they can survive with the skills they have, without taking to the streets,” said Ipuk.
SAN includes community groups that are targeted by social welfare programs, including vulnerable children, people with disabilities, neglected elderly people, low-income communities, disaster victims, and those who need special affirmation.
“This shelter is a temporary shelter with a maximum time limit of 3×24 hours before we return them to their home areas or return them to their families or refer them to psychiatric health facilities for PMD” said Head of the Banyuwangi Social Empowerment, Women’s and Family Planning Service Henik Setyorini.
The SAN Shelter is located in the Graha Rehabilitasi Sosial Penyandang Disabilitas on HOS Cokroaminoto Street number 99, Banyuwangi. In that place, there are 12 rooms for the homeless, two cells for PMD, a dormitory for children with disabilities, and a joint secretariat with the social pillars.
“The services we provide are in the form of assessment and assistance facilities. We also coordinate with related regional apparatus organization for the next follow-up,” he said.
Like when an elderly busker in a gandrung costume was found who often hung out on the city streets. The Social Service has contacted his family and coordinated with the related regional apparatus organization, because the person concerned wanted to join an art studio to channel his talent.
“Likewise if there are street children who are still of school age. We will coordinate with the related agencies so that the child can go back to school. The point is we want to provide better services so that we can handle social problems in Banyuwangi together,” he said.
The SAN Shelter is also the office of the joint secretariat with the social pillars. The secretariat is a place to coordinate and provide services for the community who need services and consultations on social problems. (*)
